Around the Romanesque church of Santa Marinha lies the largest known necropolis of the Iberian Peninsula.
Walking around the church of Santa Marinha for the first time, you mostly see granite. Only when someone points them out do the shapes appear: rectangular hollows, some small enough for a child.
Archaeologists have uncovered more than eight hundred graves cut into the rock here, the largest known necropolis on the Iberian Peninsula. Part of it still lies open in the landscape; in and around the church the story is told.
It is a ten-minute walk from the house. Go early in the morning or towards sunset, when the shadows settle into the carved edges.
